Question for the Class

Thinking back on what Michael Spector shared with us on Monday night, would you implement Google's services and open source software like Sakai and Moodle to design instruction?

If not, why?

If so, how would you use such Web 2.0 tools to create your instruction?

Oh - and does anyone know of any other open source Learning Management Systems like Moodle and Sakai?

Technology has been developing so quickly. Many people are applying Web 2.0 in their work area. Likewise, Web 2.0 technology is extremely useful for education. Like what we discussed that night, instructors could use Google Site, Google Doc, Blog, and so on to develop their courses, which also is helpful to improve students’ learning effects. In addition, instructors could use wiki technology to develop courses, which is also an open source.

  2. Elisha,
What an awesome idea you have and I have no doubt that we will see technology such as this in our lifetime. I am behind on the technology seen but I believe that education is going to be touched by new technology in every way. I think as teachers we are going to have to jump in and experiment and learn this new technology. I think one thing as instructional developers we need to remember when using this technology is to make it user friendly so that teacher will not be afraid of it. We need to develop programs to introduce teachers to this technology to introduce it into the school setting. I look forward to learning about new technology and I think it will open many doors for both students and teachers to take learning to a new level.

  3. I usually use programs as Articulate or Captivate to create online learning. I have not thought about using Moodle or Sakai but I may look into after listening to the lecture.

  4. I thought Dr. Kim's portion of the presentation was very compelling. The course she provided using Google was interesting. I looked afterward and there is a template for a classroom available on Google Sites. This in addition to Moodle and Sakai seem like reasonable options. One think that might prohibit the use of open source software is that I have noticed it seems to have a connotation of being "unprofessional" by some people. I think this is in part due to the trend discussed by Dr. Spector of all institutions believing they need to create their own product from the ground up.

  5. I believe that use of technology and web 2.0 to facilitate learning is a great way to make information more accessibile and meaningful to the learner. The use of google documents and learning management systems such as Moodle, will help instructors convey knowledge in a more time and cost efficient manner.
